Tell me about yourself:

My name is Debbi Snax . Im a tattooer, a muralist & an illustrator from the southside of Atlanta, GA.  I was born and raised here . I'm a true Georgia Peach or ATLien,  whatever you want to call it.

How long have you been tattooing for?

My tattoo journey has been complex . I’ve been tattooing for 8 years in total. 6 years professionally, outside of my apprenticeship. And it’s only been 3 years out of the last 6 that I started tattooing full time, without a 9-5 on the side.

What made you want to become a tattoo artist?

I honestly never wanted to be a tattooer growing up. Initially, I thought I wanted to be an art teacher or professor or something. When the apprenticeship opportunity popped up, I was at a crazy point in my life & was in search of fulfillment. I feel like I became a tattooer to help heal, beautify, & enhance, myself and my community. One tattoo at a time.

Why did you decide to customize the boots the way you did?

I did these babies like this because these are my top two favorite things to draw.  Elegant black women and floral arrangements are like my ”go-to” whenever I'm able to get loose.

How was working on this project for you?

Working on this was tons of fun!  I love a good high platform boot!

Are you currently working on any other projects?

No, I'm not working on any other projects right now.  Currently, I'm just getting back to tattooing. Appointment only, a couple days out the week for the moment.

How long have you been an artist for?

I've been an artist in one form or another my entire life.  My family is full of artists and eclectic souls. So I like to think it's in my blood.

What’s your favorite tattoo that you have & why?

My favorite tattoo is a siren/mermaid lady head that I have on my shoulder.  I got this piece from Valerie Vargas at Modern Classic Tattoo. This tattoo is so special to me because she's always been one of my favorite tattooers. I watched her documentaries all the time during my apprenticeship.  I always vowed that I would be as dedicated as her & go get tattooed by her at some point. And I finally made it happen in 2018! One full year, to the day, of me quitting my corporate job of 9 years, I traveled to London and got tattooed by her. This tattoo is a reward to myself for committing to my dreams & making it happen solely off of my tattooing and my art . I'll always hold the time I spent with her and her shop mates close to my heart. They were so kind and encouraging it made the tattoo I got even more special.

How have you been keeping busy during quarantine?

Quarantine has been a much needed slow down for me. To keep busy I started by building a new website & online store. I painted some things and made some things here and there. I began practicing meditation. I helped my brother plant a garden & turned my basement into a skating rink for exercise. :) It's been pretty nice.

Congrats on being selected Debbi Snax! Great work and composition. I appreciate that there are great forward thinking young people that go outside the spectrum of the norm. I’ve been into TUK Creepers and Docs since my junior high days… Fast forward to be a grandpa of 3 beautiful children; I’m still within the realm of artistic development & still listen to punk music. Expression thru art in any form is ant extension of your deepest thoughts & being. As in music as well it fuels & propels progressive & expansion beyond the confines of society. Keep up the great work!
As for TUK Shoes, I love the support you folks are giving the budding new artists of this generation. I grew up in the 80’s & listened to various genres of music. It is truly the blessing of our freedom & how we choose our destiny.
Please be safe, wear a mask & practice safe distancing. May WE all survive this pandemic, social outcry for justice & live thru this declining economy! Peace out & God bless US all.
